On September 21, 2022, the Islamic Regime’s anti-riot and paramilitary Basij forces killed at least five people, including one child, during protests held in Oshnavieh and the Balu village of Orumiyeh, located in the province of West Azerbaijan. Sources in Balu reported that the anti-riot and Basij forces opened fire on a group of young people holding a protest rally near the Basij base in the village.
Four people were severely injured. Danesh Rahnema, 25, and Abdollah Mahmoudi, 21, died due to the severity of their injuries after the wounded civilians were taken to Khomeini Hospital in Orumiyeh. The two others were in critical condition. One source in Oshnavieh said that three other protesters identified as Amin Maarofi (16), Milan Haghighi (21), and Sadraddin Litani (27) were killed during protest rallies in the city.
In a video showing Maarofi’s lifeless body being washed, it is seen that he was killed by a bullet that penetrated his chest. According to the information collected by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), Regime military forces killed at least 12 protestors during the protest rallies held in Orumiyeh, Oshnavieh, Piranshahr, Divandarreh, Saqqez, Dehgolan and Kermanshah in the days following the killing of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini. These civilians were identified as Farjad Darvishi, Mohsen Mohammadi, Fereydoun Mahmoudi, Reza Lotfi, Zakariya Khiyal, Foad Ghadimi, Minou Majidi, Danesh Rahnema, Sadraddin Litani, Milan Haghighati, Amin Maarofi, and Abdollah Mahmudpour.
This regions experienced one of the highest death tolls on the night of September 21, 2022.
